Caribbean electrical plugs

The last time I went through the Caribbean it was on my sailboat.  I
remember pulling into St. Martin and going to one of the large suppliers
to buy and adapter.  At that time my requirements were minimal.  I only
needed a 120v source to run the battery charger.  Now I have some major
power requirements and will be getting into Atlantic waters by early
summer.
I currently have the 2-30 amp 120vac smart Y to get my 240vac
needs.  I can handle 50hz so that isn't an issue.  I'm wondering about
adapters that I can get and what I should expect.  I'm transiting the
canal in June then over to Cartagena for a few month.  From there
through the ABC's and then proceed up the island chain.
Any insight as to ordering ahead of time and have someone bring them
down to Panama when they visit or should I just "wing it" and figure it
out along the way? Problem is things get pretty scarce in some areas and
I would like to go into the area fully armed for the conditions.

Thanks,
Les Dobbe

Les,

One thing I'd suggest, buy some raw parts that will allow you to fabricate
the connectors you will need.  I recently purchased two replacement 30 amp
shore power ends and receptacles because mine were burning, dangerously!  I
was LUCKY to find them in Costa Rica.  South of PV it's been just about
impossible to get anything boat specific.  When a diver dropped a keel
cooler zinc bolt in the water I had to fabricate one from some threaded
stock and two nuts.  In Panama I hope to be able to get Monel material to
replace the stainless I used.  Anyway, there are charts that show the power
by island I believe, some quick googling should show it, if I get a chance
I'll look.  Take care, when do you anticipate canal transit?  Reported
delays are for N to S yachts only, S to N are transiting in 4 to 10 days.

When 30amp cord ends burn up you can protect the boat end of the cord by retrofitting a 50amp unit, That way if a malfunction happens the damage will happen first at the weaker dockside connection which should remain at 30amps. Having taken both 30 and 50amp ends apart you can see the difference in fire saftey prevention.
