Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI am planning a Canada trip this coming season and wanted to see how I could
get reasonable wifi via my cell phome while in Canada
I have Verizon 3G data and phones
I realize that I can sign up for the NA plan for voice and remember from
prior trips that data access was priced unreasonably.
I do have an on-board wifi booster and antenna and can get shore based
signals.
What about Virgin Mobil and Virgin Mobile Canada = Any experiences
Any updates on availability ?

Hello Greg,
I work on the St. Lawrence, and live on the Rideau. Unsecured private
wi-fi is not unusual, but less prevalent than a few years ago; however,
there are many more free public hotspots. (restaurants, libraries..) My
cell is Virgin. They use the Telus and ATT towers, and provide good
coverage and I have had good success tethering my phone into my laptop.
Enjoy your visit! (were you not in Kingston recently?)

Last year on the loop in canada, we had verizon cell and aircard(internet)
plans and considered them reasonable. Voice was the north american plan
(with reduced minutes) and internet was something called global access all
in all if I remember correctly, the cost was $120 a month for
internet (approx. $60 over our normal) and $20 more for voice but only for
the 3 months in canada . We changed back to our normal plan when we
reentered the US. We wanted the connectivity and figured the cost for
having it canada was $80 above our US plan per month total toll for our
canadian cruise was $240 for the 3 months.

I used my aircard in Canada last year. Prior to going I had inquired at the
local Verizon office if there was a data plan for Canada. They said No and (at
that time, anyway), I could not find anything on the web for such a plan.
When we got to Canada, I was still getting a signal, so I continued to use the
aircard (more secure than WiFi !) on my computer.
By the time I got home, I had a $600+ bill for "roaming" for the month !
When I talked to billing they advised me of the "North America plan" or
whatever its called. I was able to negotiate the bill down to what the plan
would have been...".if only I had known"!
So....just because you're able to log on doesn't mean your not on a different
"Plan".
