I have a SPOT messenger device, second generation, which works fine and
was on a service plan until this month. I've dropped the service because
I now have an Iridium sat phone on board.

First person to step up and pay me to pack and ship it can have it
gratis. There's still some life left in the batteries (it takes AA
lithiums, commonly available). Basic service plans are about $160 a year.

Details of the device and service can be found on SPOT's web site at
www.findmespot.com/en/?cid=102

My unit has a gray case rather than orange as shown on that site. It
comes with the carrying case, which is a bit shopworn.

I would advise you keep the spot. Sat phones do not work as reliably in bad
weather and that is when you need them. The text feature on spot allows for
messages to loved ones as well without having to have the expense of voice
contact.

Cheers
