I will not be able to take you up on your generous offer but I want to take
this opportunity to tell you that we were able to spend a week at Port
D'Escale (Vieux Port Marina) in old Montreal last summer. We cruised up
there from the Chesapeake via the Rideau. It was a spectacular trip.
We live in a big city (Washington, DC) but we were really impressed with
Canada in general and the Rideau and Montreal in particular. Great city,
great food and wonderful people.
I remember one instance after we left the Carrillion Lock (65' drop) we
were trying to get into a small marina (Point Anglaise) on the Ottawa River
with an incredible amount of wind. We had not seen diesel since Kingston
and it was definitely time to refuel. The chart did not show Port Anglaise
but another little community marina nearby. I went into the little
community marina by mistake and it was one of those things that you knew
the minute we approached the rocks that marked the narrow entrance that I
had screwed up but the wind was blowing so hard that it looked like the
best choice was to continue on in.
Thank god a sail boater who was on his way out saw the fear in my face and
the lack of space for a 43' boat and backed up to let me in the narrow
entrance. I got the boat turned around in the little basin and startled
onlookers pointed down the river to try and show us where Port Anglaise was
located. But with all the noise from the wind and my engines I did not have
a clue what they were trying to tell me. As I got back out in the river I
noticed a little open boat followed me out of the marina and got in front
to lead me into Port Anglaise. The two guys got soaked in the little boat
but their assistance was really appreciated.
When we got into Port Anglaise there was a boat at the gas dock so we tied
up to an adjoining dock to wait our turn. A couple got off their boat and
helped us tie up. I asked the man (Roger Bourne) where I could get charts
of the St Lawrence since we had decided to backtrack to the Thousand
Islands since we missed them going up the Rideau. He insisted on giving us
10 brand new Canadian Charts for the trip that he had just taken and only
asked us to mail them back when we were finished.
We left after fueling and spent the night at St Anne de Bellevue, another
jewel. We have great memories of our trip, the Canadian people we met and
plan on doing it again, maybe next year.
