Update on Hill Briefing

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to give you a quick update on plans for the Hill briefing.

Content and structure: The overall focus will be on adult literacy / adult education as an effective way to address a variety of social and personal issues.

  • To set the context, I will open with a brief summary of the current landscape. I'll be reaching out to you individually over the next few weeks for input.

  • I have asked three graduates of adult education programs to speak about their experiences. Rachel DeVaughan (Mississippi) is confirmed; I'm waiting on confirmations from the Rev David Hendricks and a person from Rosario.

  • We will conclude with Margaret Patterson's report on the findings from her research project on factors that inhibit participation in adult education and the solutions that her interviewees have suggested.

Advertising and PR:

  • I have spoken with Jennifer Wise in Congressman Roe's office about sending out a Dear Colleague, and have sent a draft of the Dear Colleague to her and to Erica DiCio in Congressman Yarmuth's office

  • I have retained Kuna Tavalin of the McKeon Group to assist with publicity for the event. Kuna and her staff will take on management of the Dear Colleague process from here on. They will create a Save the Date notice to go out soon, and a flyer to go out when all of the speakers are confirmed. In addition to the Dear Colleague going out House-wide (education LAs), we will ask Senator Reed's office to do one on the Senate side. For both the House and the Senate there will also be more direct contact with the LAs of Members on the Ed/Workforce-related committees. Kuna and I have also identified think tanks and members of the press who will receive the materials; if you have suggestions in that regard, please let me know.

Jeff, Kuna will be in touch with you directly about working with CEF on this.

That's it for now. I'm off to Hawaii for a week, but I promise to (a) respond to emails while I'm away, and (b) come back. Maybe.
