Dear colleagues and friends,
Many thanks to everyone who came to the SSYCDS annual meeting at AAS
Columbus! I have to admit I was a bit overwhelmed by your enthusiasm when I
walked into the room. I booked a room twice the size of last year’s and
ordered more food, yet we still had to get more on the spot and squeeze in
extra chairs—some of you even stood the whole time! We’re so grateful for
your support and excitement.
Many thanks to our speakers--Christian Lamouroux, Pierre-Étienne Will, Rong
Yingheng, Richard von Glahn, and Zoe Shan Lin--and our wonderful
moderators, Pat Ebrey and Charles Hartman. They did a fantastic job
introducing* La dynastie des Song: Histoire générale de la Chine*, a
remarkable survey of Song history by Professor Lamouroux, and further
enriched the presentation by discussing its context--the circumstances of
French Sinology and its influence on this historical narrative. Now, more
than ever, it is important to foster mutual appreciation between scholarly
traditions across borders and to celebrate international friendship and
solidarity.
2024-2025 has been a strong year for the Society. We welcome three new
board members--Anne Gerristen, Hsiao-Wen Cheng, and Chun Chen--and bid
farewell to three board members, Michael Fuller, Naomi Standen, and Lucille
Chia, whose contributions have profoundly shaped the Society as it stands
today. Under the leadership of our secretary, Yiwen Li, our membership has
increased by 20%, the highest growth since the pandemic--an achievement
made possible by your generous support. With her steady leadership, our
treasurer, Man Xu, has ensured that our finances remain in a healthy
condition. Under the guidance of Charles Hartman and Paul Smith, the
upcoming issue of The Journal of Song Yuan Studies is nearly complete. We
look forward to receiving more submissions from you in the future and
appreciate your support of the journal through your subscriptions and
article downloads. Finally, we are now on Bluesky! Find us at
https://bsky.app/profile/ssycds.bsky.social. Looking forward to connecting
with you there.
The AAS is always a lively gathering, and I wish I had the chance to speak
with more of you while we were there. If you have any suggestions for how
we can improve or new ideas for next year’s annual meeting, please feel
free to reach out to me (yzuo@ucsb.edu) or Yiwen (yiwenli@cityu.edu.hk).
We’d love to hear from you!
Finally, I’m attaching some photos along with the list of publications by
our members announced at the AAS meeting. Congratulations again! We look
forward to receiving more submissions from you and celebrating our members’
achievements again next year.
Sincerely yours,
Ya Zuo
President of the Society for Song, Yuan, and Conquest Dynasties
