Fellow Committee Members,
As Chair of the Committee/Working Group, I want to thank those members who attended our meeting in Miami on Sunday morning. We exchanged valuable information and consoled each other who share common problems while we look for solutions.
As a committee we agreed to hold a phone conference between the mid year and annual meetings. Chuck Thompson has agreed to provide continued support for our working group. We will try to schedule a phone conference in January 2010.
The members also thought that IMLA should remind the membership of the existence of this working group by placing a brief article in a future newsletter. I will ask Chuck if this is possible.
As a follow-up to my presentation on underage drinking and Gainesville's current approach to addressing the problem, I am attaching a newspaper article that appeared in the Gainesville Sun Newspaper. I am pleased that the newspaper recognizes that the number of violations has decreased since we adopted our ordinance. As I informed the members, the trial court decision that upheld the constitutionality of the ordinance is on appeal to the first district court of appeal in Florida. Briefs are currently being prepared and filed with oral arguments likely in the Winter/Spring of 2010.
