In the July 2001 issue of Seven Seas Cruising Association Bulletin (page 45)
there appeared an article by Nelson and St. Clair which presented
information that Yamaha may not stand behind its four stroke engine, if
there is any wiggle room for them to abdicate responsibility. The Editor of
SSCA attempted to contact Yamaha for more than five (5) weeks to get a
clarification on Yamaha's position, and seemed to run into a stone wall.
I am on the verge of buying a Yamaha Four stroke, 40 HP outboard as the
engine for my tender, and as a result of this article have become concerned
about the integrity of manufacturer's support of their warranty.
Does anyone have experience with this group of engines, especially regarding
warranty claims? Are there other four stroke manufactures which have a
better record? Any experience with Yamaha and their warranty?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I too read this article and was disappointed in Yamaha especially since I
had such good luck with their 2 stroke engine. I have no experience with
their 4stroke machines. Honda seems to have the coener in this market.

We bought a 9.9 hp four-stroke outboard the other day. It was extremely
difficult to decide between the Honda and the Yamaha. We got the Honda only
because we like the local dealer better. Both are very excellent machines.

I also just went through the same selection process for a kicker. In addition
to the above, the Honda was several pounds lighter which made the difference
for me.
Still means drilling several more holes in the boat as the four stroke
outboard bracket has a wider base than the old 2 stroke bracket.

Weight is always a factor. As it turns out, this new 9.9 Honda is lighter
than our old 9.9 Johnson two-stroke, though the package is physically a
little larger.

My only complaint would be with the new slick styling is that there is
no good place for a handhold to lift or carry it.
