Eric,
It's the ethanol that gives the gasoline/ethanol its octane rating. If
you remove the ethanol the remaining gas is too low octane to use
without damaging engines.

My question (this has been bugging me for a
full week) is why not do this with every five gallons of gas that is going
in your dinghy and then run it through a Racor (or your favorite water fuel
separator) and get rid of the water/ethanol mix and leave nice clean gas?
Sounds too easy...

You might want to do a little more research on this issue.

So how did we ever have any octane before our legislators pandered to the
agricultural lobbyists and put this poison in our fuel? Cars don't mind it,
but my outboard sure does and I will go a long ways to avoid it. Ask any
small engine mechanic what a bonus this fuel has been for their business.
Ethanol has less energy than gasoline, so we get poorer mileage on top of
all of the other problems.
