Re: T&T: Cell Phone Plans for Canada - data

We all know that data roaming into Canada can be terribly expensive. We
cruise extensively in BC waters each year and use the Verizon cell phone
plan with roaming into Canada, costing $10 per month, for our voice
communications.

For data, I use a Telus device (Telus Mobility Internet). In my case it is
an USB 4G (LTE) wireless modem (called a Mobile Internet Key) which I use on
my laptop and in my Cradlepoint router on the boat. The latter allows
internet connections with USB 4G LTE devices, as well as acting as a wifi
bridge. Telus also has a dedicated hotspot device, called a Smart Hub.

I use their Flex Plan which costs $10 per month when not using data and goes
to $70 per month when using between 2 and 6 GB monthly. The tiered plan has
an overage cost of 5 cents per MB. Getting registered with a US-based credit
card can be tricky, but be persistent and you will get an account. However,
you must buy the device to get the flex plan.

I have found that the Telus kiosks operated by Tom Harris Co. to be fairly
good at the billing process. I have used them in Whiterock and in Victoria,
BC.

We do use a lot of internet while underway and in anchorages and found that
Telus has good 4G coverage in the Gulf Islands, the Strait of Georgia, and
up the Johnston Straits to Port Hardy.
