My initial reaction to the suggestion for a picture website of members'
boats was positive, but after spending a couple of minutes paging through
this one...
Aside from the fact that the photo quality is poor, I got bored with it very
quickly. It looks much more like an ego trip than an information site.
TWL as now constituted offers the ultimate democratic society
(notwithstanding Georgs' benevolent dictatorship). At present, the only
differences among us are the opinions which spark debate, and the only thing
that matters is the quality of those discussions, not our boats or
backgrounds.
I've changed my mind. I think we're better off without such a site.

I also had the same reaction you did when visiting the Recreational Boats
site. It also took forever to download the pictures on each page because
some had several photos. I didn't care for the list of names to click on to
get to the photo page because you won't know till you get there if it is a
16 footer or a 60 that they are displaying. On other sites there is a page
of thumbnail links that downloads quickly and you can then choose to enlarge
the photo by clicking on it. You know up front what you are about to view.
As far as the differences among us...when I first signed on I was
intimidated by the size and cost of some of the members boats and what they
were able to afford. I think this is partly why some choose to lurk rather
than participate. I almost unsubscribed thinking that I was out of my
league but the wealth of information that I could use and the amazing depth
of interest by members kept me aboard. I am not able to contribute as much
as the many professionals that reside here either, but I do contribute when
I can and try to be as helpful as possible on the subjects that I have
experience in. For most, including me......this is all for fun. And I,
like others, like to share my pleasure of owning, building and maintaining
my boat by making pictures available to whoever might want to see them.
Between the Twin Screws and Steelaway picture sites, I have had over 25,000
hits in one year...someone is interested!
As far as being out of my league.....
aren't we all just trying to stay on top of the water for as long as we can?

The photos are whatever people submit, not everyone is a pro
photographer or has top notch gear; this in mind the REC boats site
looked pretty decent.
Second, I don't get your ego comments AT all. Its now somehow gauche
to post pictures of our boats? I'm pretty sure that people posting
picts of mid-80's Bayliners are doing it because they want to share a
photo of a boat they adore and not because of some failing of ego.
Finally, what does it matter if someone wants to show off their boat.
How that could possibly offend anyone is entirely beyond me. I for
one would enjoy a site with photo's of member's boats.-Ted
I dropped the "No thanks" from the subject line to make this a more positive
post.......
Cap'tn Joe had a great idea and was willing to put in the time and effort.
Lets respond to that and see if he is still interested after hearing some
positive input. He is having a problem posting to the list so I'm not sure
if he is listening. His e-mail address is Joseph Berta at

Garrett-----You and I could learn alot from each other checking out each
other boats and I am always eager to learn and I hope you are to.
By the way if you need an ego to pump up which is good exercise and part of
self fullment, my friends say I have a lot more ego than I need, I would be
glad to let you have some of mine. Just think how nice it would be to see
all the different gimmicks that the listees write about and would be so
much more under standable if we could see it for ourselves. I hope we can
get your affirmative vote. As with any project we need all the help we can
get.

As I said in response to Murray Birch's comments, a simple way to support
TWL's discourse with photos of projects is a good idea and I would favour
it. And, since it seems every other respondent wants boat pictures posted, I
acknowledge I'm a minority of one. In keeping with my comments on democracy,
I will give way, and with good will. In any event, the issue is moot since
the site already exists.
Comment:
My use of the phrase "ego trip" clearly referred only to what I saw on the
picture site I visited. Unfortunately, it seems to have been mistaken for a
much broader allegation. It wasn't, but if offence was taken, none was
intended. A couple of e-mails and comments have been a touch personal in
tone. Not quite what I was concerned about in the first place, but an
unhappy surprise nonetheless. For those imputing a rationale for my opinion
beyond what was in my original post, know that both my ego and my boat are
big. Enough already.
After a roaring start to the month, it seemed like January's TWL was in for
a slow finish . No longer!
Cheers, Garrett
