Fwd: Update and Request from OCTAE

Good morning, all,

The message string below follows up on the final agenda item from our most recent board meeting (the one on the ETS/OCTAE PIAAC data launch event). I’ll be in touch as I hear more about the planning.

Note that the tentative date for the event is late November/early December. I will be away on vacation Nov 26-Dec 4 and almost completely incommunicado during that time, so please let me know if you can be available to represent NCL if the event is a physical one and happens during that week. Blaire, if there’s any chance that you can be involved, that would be great.

I’m copying Margaret Patterson on this message because I know that she has deep interest in working with the data, and because she (and Jeff, of course) would be a good choice to represent NCL along with any of us who are directly involved.

Deborah

Hi, Heidi and Johan,

Thanks so much, Heidi, for forwarding this message. The NCL would certainly be interested in participating in the launch event. Do OCTAE and ETS have a plan for planning? Are there planning meetings or other activities that we should know about? Are you thinking that this would be a physical event, or an online one, or some combination of the two?

Questions, questions — If it would be helpful, I’d be happy to have a quick phone conference with you to explore possibilities.

Thanks again for inviting NCL to be part of this.

Cordially,

Deborah

Hi Deborah– I’m forwarding this email from Johan to you, and cc’ing Jeff who (we hope!) got the initial email.  We think NCL may want to be part of this state-level data launch.

To give you an update of how this is shaping up, NGA has offered to host the event at the end of Nov/early Dec at the Hall of States. We have also heard from NAWB, the National Council on State Legislatures, Digital Promise, New American Foundation, and National Skills Coalition.  I haven’t seen the state-level infographics in draft form yet, but I believe that the state-level data will be of enormous interest to advocates and policy makers.

Please let Johan know if the Coalition or any individual members would like to be involved in any way.

Dear Colleagues:

Irwin Kirsch and his team at Educational Testing Services (ETS) have completed an analysis of data from The Programme or the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), which is the Survey of Adults that allows us to get a picture of the skill proficiencies of the U.S. population. Irwin and his team now have PIAAC data for each state and DC. They are working toward producing a report that contains results on PIAAC and other state level data.  Our office has agreed to work together with ETS on an event that would introduce these data. In our discussions, we were thinking about other organizations that might have an interest in joining the planning of or participating actively in the event. We are looking at a late November time frame.

When looking at the data, we felt that your organization might be interested. Hence, my question.

If you would like to join us in this effort, please let me know by COB on Friday, October 7th.

Thank you for your consideration and looking forward to your response.

Best wishes,

Johan

Hi everyone,

I already made a commitment to help, so you can count on me.

During my travels around the Hill today I had a chance to gather a little intel from NGA, some of which I feel OK about sharing, but please don’t share beyond the board (and Margaret).

It sounds like the date may be Dec. 1, (based on room availability) but that is very, very tentative, so don’t quote me on that. And it appears that the use of the word “hosting” is very deliberately used here. NGA is getting them the space but for now, at least, it’s not clear on the extent of their involvement beyond that.

The only other thing I know is that it appears OCTAE is not thinking of this being a press event — the space at Hall of States wouldn’t be appropriate for that anyway. Something more like a symposium — but if that word brings to mind something like the PIAAC research conference, erase that image, because that would not be a format that would work for policy people.

Again, this was a confidential conversation, so please do not share.

Jeff

Subject: [NCL Board] Fwd: Update and Request from OCTAE

Best, Heidi

Subject: Update and Request

Johan
