Interesting topic. As to Trawlers, whats in a name? The modern "high speed
trawlers" are echoed in the commercial fleet with High Speed Gilnetters
(20kn or more) and High Speed Seine Boats. Doesn't make them any less
legitimate, just fulfilling different needs.
I have Commander Beebe's first edition. His Passagemaker was a lot more
like a commercial fishboat than a Nordhavn, but that was Beebe's personal
preference. Certainly luxurious "fast trawler type boats" were around
then, but Beebe was into real Passagemaking. Beebe was also into
reliability and simplicity of design, and if you go back to his original
book you might feel his boats were spartan.
My boat is a now-retired commercial troller. Growing up with that kind of
boat, it suits me, but it might not suit you. Everything is Heavy Duty.
333Cat, 3 1/2 shaft, Wagner T-Ram and Swann Anchor Winch. It is a
beautiful old (42 years) wooden boat. I like it. I often anchor up with
Nordhavns and Grand Banks and Ocean Alexanders, and West Bays. We all get
along fine. All of us are enjoying the same "life style" if you like. Some
more luxurious than me, but we all enjoy the same things.
Motorcycles, now that is a different matter. I like Harleys, but I dont own
one. My main bike is a 1983 Honda Shadow V-twin 750.(6 speed, shaft drive)
The uninitiated mistake it for a Sportster- thats ok. I own the honda
because
a) it was cheap enough for me to enjoy some of my other vices as well as my
bike
b) it is bulletproof reliable.
Honda did not "copy" the Harley Sportster- they decided to work in the
same genre, and improve on it. My pal and his two sons have beautiful
Harleys. We ride together. Again, we are enjoying the same things. No,
its not a Harley, but it is just as much a bike. Actually, I am lusting
after a Chang-Jiang, as one can never have too many boats or bikes.
I dont have a problem with calling a Caamano a trawler, or a Nordic Tug, or
a Lord Nelson-- Trawler is a mindset, not a boat. The same as biker.
So throw your bikes on deck, cruise up for a visit. I dont mind if you
drive a Nordhavn, and if you ride a Harley thats o k with me too.

With the exception of your taste in motorcycles, you express my sentiments
exactly: trawlering is a mindset, not a description of a type of boat.
