Electrical power

I would like to share a few thoughts on generating electrical power when at
anchor in a trawler.
We cruise in a large converted shrimp boat and always anchor out. We have two
large freezers, a full size washing machine, lights, and computers that all run
on 110v. For two years now we have been running our 20k Northernlights 3 to 4
hours a day and charging our 4 8D batteries and then drawing off through an
inverter. It's been a pain in the butt, and expensive, and rough on the batts.
We recently got a Honda 2000ie gas generator that is really quiet, burns a
gallon of gas every 6 hours, runs everything we have, and trickle charges the
main bank. Simple, easy, cheap. I have it set up to suck gas out of a 5 gallon
jerry can I change out once a week.
I have come to the conclusion that trying to run anything regularly off an
inverter is nuts. I know most folks love their wind and solar generators and
their boat sized 12v systems, but when you tally up the costs and figure in the
life span of the components, it's hard to beat $5 a day for gas and $900 for the
generator.
For the clothes dryer, 5 ton aircon, electric heat, etc, we fire up the 20k. If
I want to add a room, I fire up my Miller diesel welder.
Just saying.
