Dear All,

I am happy to introduce a new member of the listserv, Curie Virag (
curie.virag@utoronto.ca ).  Below is her self-introduction.

I am an assistant professor at the University of Toronto (East Asian Studies
and Humanities). I received my Ph.D. in 2004 from the Dept. of East Asian
Languages and Civilizations at Harvard, and am currently writing up my book
manuscript, tentatively titled "Self and the Ethics of Feeling in Pre-modern
China," which traces the evolution of philosophical, literary and political
discourses of emotions from antiquity to the late twelfth centuries, and
relates these discourses to shifting conceptions of the self. I consider
myself an intellectual historian, with a particular interest in
understanding historical change from the point of view of subjective
awareness (thus how people understand themselves as perceiving, knowing and
evaluative beings).
Apart from the emotions, other topics I have been exploring include
conceptions of memory, music theory, and the role of movement in aesthetics.
My article, "Emotions and Human Agency in the Thought of Zhu Xi" appeared in
issue 37 (2007) of the Journal of Song-Yuan Studies 37.
