Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsJim,
There is no reason not to use the GIWW from Apalachicola to Houston.
The ICW is open. From Apalachicola to Mobile Bay the waterway is pretty
much as it was before Katrina. From Mobile Bay to west of New Orleans
there is a lot of destruction ashore but the waterway is open (Harvey
Locks closed for maintenance, but Algiers is open). Most marinas in the
stretch from mile 126 to New Orleans closed and fuel generally not
available from 126EHL to 14.9WHL. Of course your boat should have a
cruising range of at least 200 miles on one tank of fuel to try this
section. There is one marina open in New Orleans now and fuel just
across from Orleans Marina, but this is off the beaten path from the GIWW.
Bottom line, if I had to move a boat from Apalachicola to Houston I
wouldn't be overly concerned about the GIWW. It is not as pretty and
little if anywhere to stop from Mobile Bay to west of New Orleans, but
otherwise with a sound boat with at least a 200 mile cruising range, it
should not be a problem.
