NYC Marina

Rick asked about Marinas in NYC.

We stayed at Liberty Landing in Jersey City for the 4th of July weekend last
year.  It's very well protected form surge, secure, very good floating docks.
Ferry access to NYC downtown.  PATH train access to midtown is about a mile
walk.  Short walk to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry. Walk to Science
museum.  Marina is private, but part of huge Liberty state park. No shopping,
not even a newspaper on site. Only negative is cost.  Price for the 4th
weekend was $5/ft, 3 day minimum.  I think the normal rate is $2-3/ft.

There is a good anchorage west of Liberty Island, at 40 41.7N, 74 03.8W  I've
seen trawlers in there.

I've heard nothing good about the other marinas in NYC, they are all severely
affected by surges from the ferries.  A reasonable alternate is Atlantic
Highlands NJ Muni.  There are substantial fixed docks, excellent grocery
shopping, many good restaurants in walking distance.  Very well protected.
There is excellent high speed ferry service to South Street Seaport and 34th
St. East River.

Rick

You obviously know this, but you are wise to consider the surge problem
on the NYC Hudson River.  Last year we stayed one night at Surfside 3 at
Chelsea
Pier.  The surge was so bad that I was concerned about the condition of my
dock lines and we had to get off the boat before becoming seasick.  Since we
planned to spend all day and most of the night in town that was ok.  When we
got back to the boat after midnight the surge was not a problem and we left
early the next morning.

Other than the surge and the price ($4.50/ft) it was great.  The marina is
very
nice and the staff is too.  Access to the city is excellent.

One of the tourist things we did was to visit the top of the Empire State
Building.  Through the coin operated binoculars we could just see
"Fiddlesticks" down below at the marina, but it was easy to tell that
she was rocking and rolling in the slip.

I wonder why they don't build some type of breakwater.  It seems that almost
anything would be some help.

Looking for a marina for a group of boaters for a couple of nights late in
July that has good access to NYC and good protection from the surge of the
Hudson.
