My proprietary model is crashing again. Sometimes it works, sometimes
not, depending on the parameters that I apply to it (which, of course,
changes the geometry).
Sure would be nice if it didn't just crash, but rather gave even a HINT
at what was going wrong and/or what I could consider changing. Very
frustrating having F5 work and F6 take 30 minutes to crash. I'm wasting
a LOT of time trying different things blindly.

crashes. I had to reduce the fidelity of the model significantly to get
it to create.
I am fine with limitations on the fidelity. It is the time consuming
nature of this, and the fact that I'm working in the dark, that is
frustrating.

Try changing the view to Grid Only (F11) before rendering (F6)? Sometimes,
for me, it's the preview window that can't handle it.

For more complex, high-polygon count designs, sometimes it helps to explicitly insert render() operations to flatten a level or three of hierarchy.

It’s likely not related to increased resolution at all. We should never crash and crash bugs have high priority, so I’m willing to dig quite a bit to help you out.

occur erratically, unpredictably. At 30 minutes per run, it will take
some time.

First clue is that after crashing 5 times in a row with "$fa=5", when I
removed that, it stopped crashing twice in a row. I will try to create
a non-proprietary test case.

The following code crashed F6 after perhaps 45 minutes, consuming 1.7 GB
of RAM. It renders in under 1 second using F5. I realize that it is a
bizarre case. I only submit it because it demonstrates a way to have F5
work but F6 crash on my machine. I look forward to others trying it.

Just to recap: Is this the 64-bit official 2015.03 binary, running on 64-bit Win 8.1 in Win 8 compatibility mode?
Could just paste the output of Help->Library Info just so we have all the details?

See screen shot of Help, About for OpenSCAD release I am running, and
screen shot of Windows info about my computer (OS, 64-bit, RAM, etc).
Not sure how to prove that the OpenSCAD I'm running is the 64-bit
version; it installed in Program Files (rather than Program Files
(x86)). Note that previous crashes occurred around 300 MB of RAM (but,
of course, this crash could be due to something else going on).
If you can render this using F6 in 2 seconds, and it takes 45 minutes
here before it crashes, then something very strange is going on. I know
that at one point I considered the new code to be MUCH faster than the
old. That seems to have changed here. I have NO idea why.

Perhaps from the Event Log ?

I'm trying this on the clean VM I built, but I'm having to do it via Chrome
Remote Desktop from work (over a 4G line,) so I may not make progress until
I get home tonight.
I'm not clear about the Windows 8 compatibility mode that's noted above.
Is that something you're setting in the properties of the openscad.exe file?

I hope the attached screen shot helps. Right click, select Properties,
go to the Compatibility tab. Not at all sure this is necessary, but I
thought it was necessary a few weeks ago.

Could you try installing some other versions of the driver and see if that helps?

Downloading the 3rd set of drivers in the last 30 minutes. Each one is
"best" but this one claims to be best-er. We will see.
Marius: are you saying that the little test script executes F6 in 2-3
seconds on your computer? I'm running eight cores at 4 GHz with 8 GB of
RAM and it takes 18 minutes and then crashes. I can imagine something
about the video drivers that might have a problem with the data that F6
creates, but I cannot understand how that might make the underlying
calculations take that much longer. Does OpenSCAD use video cores for
computations, in addition to CPU cores?

Running 2015.03 on 64 bit Windows 8.1 in normal (not compatibility) mode I
can successfully F5 and F6 the test code. F6 takes 2 minutes, 46 seconds to
run.
Running on the same machine in Windows 8 compatibility mode, F5 works, but
F6 is sucking up hordes of memory and taking forever (over 20 minutes so
far.)
(This is my Win 8.1 laptop running 2015.03, the VM is giving me fits and
refusing to step up to OpenGL 2.0 or better.)
So I am seeing something problematic, but without knowing the specifics of
what stepping down to Win 8 compatibility from Win 8.1, I can't say what it
might be.

Right you are. Once I remove the compatibility mode, the test program I
supplied runs successfully in 1:12.
I am now using new drivers. Focusing more on getting it right than on
finding the smoking gun, especially if there turns out to be no gun.
I will now test the proprietary scripts

And the proprietary code runs in 37 seconds, even with $fa and $fs set.
Not sure if it was the drivers or the compatibility mode, but things are
working great here now.

Can't reproduce the 2014.03/32 numbers:

Which indicates there is a speed-up for this example, but not with
releases, but with build targets.
