05/13/14 - New Haven, East Rock Park -- Highlights include a first
year Summer Tanager found at the start of the closed road that winds
up east rock (begins at English drive, across from the athletic
fields). Also found were 19 species of Warblers, including two Cape
May Warblers, Tennessee Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Wilson's
Warbler.
Editor's Note: That is the start of what is commonly called the Giant
Steps, and the athletic field is Rice Field.

05/13/14 - New Haven/Hamden, East Rock Park -- I started out at the
Eli Whitney Museum area. It was full of birds. I think I had 5
Wilson's Warbler, a Blackburnian Warbler. I then ran into Jake Musser
who told me about what he found on the Giant Steps. I reached the base
of the Giant Steps (near the red gate) and over the next hour of so
our group of birders saw 3 Cape May Warblers (all in the tall spruce
at the start of the road), 2 Blackburnian Warblers, 1 Bay-breasted
Warbler and 1 Tennessee Warbler. We also briefly refound the Summer
Tanager. According to Mark Scott there were 22 species of warbler in
the park today. It was a great day.

surprise was an Evening Grosbeak that came and went.

minutes in my spruce tree; best looks I've ever had. Also, 1

5/13/14 - South Windsor, Station 43, Newberry Road -- Virginia Rail
and both Willow and Alder Flycatchers. Alder was record early for me
and gave both calls as it sat for about five minutes at close range!
But the bird of the day was a first year male BLUE GROSBEAK seen half
way down Vibert Road. This was # 233 for my stn 43 list.

the continuing male BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE (near Meigs Pt. picnic area),
and LITTLE BLUE X TRICOLORED HERON HYBRID ('boulder' pond at Meigs
Pt.)
