Dear Professor Shinno,

For a brief introduction of the archaeological discoveries and research of
Northern Song Kaifeng, she could refer to the first part of Chapter 13 in
Liu Qingzhu 劉慶柱 ed., Zhongguo gudai ducheng kaogu faxian yu
yanjiu
中國古代都城考古發現與研究
vol.1 (Beijing: shehui kexue wenxian, 2016).

There have been quite a few studies on the imperial city and the palace
city of Northern Song Kaifeng in recent years based on the archaeological
finds and the textual descriptions, such as Qiu Gang丘剛, Li Hequn李合群, Liu
Chunying劉春迎, and Ge Qifeng葛奇峰's studies (they used to be or are in charge
of Kaifengshi wenwu gongzuo dui開封市文物工作隊) and Zhang Jing張勁's monograph, Liang
Song Kaifeng Lin'an huangcheng gongyuan yanjiu
兩宋開封臨安皇城宮苑研究 (Jinan: Qilu
shushe, 2008). The discussion mainly focuses on the issues of the perimeter
of the palace wall, the layout, and the city-gates. I am afraid the
question of the size of the palace halls and rooms could be hardly answered
from archaeological perspective. Some Song sources like Songhuiyao
provide some basic descriptions (eg. the size of the Bright Hall).

I think your colleague might be interested in Professor Deng Xiaonan's鄧小南
paper, "Yanyin zhijian: Songdai shangshuneisheng guankui掩映之間—宋代尚書內省管窺," Hanxue
yanjiu
漢學研究 27.2 (2009): 5-42, in which the author explores the role of
female Inner Court Secretariat in handling official documents in the
palace. Also, Professor Ebrey in her Emperor Huizong has a vivid account
of palace lives of the emperor, officials, clerks, technocrats, and palace
women. The layout of the palace city of Kaifeng in English is included in
the book (p.5).

Dear Colleagues,

A quick question from my Japanese Studies colleague.  Are there a lot of
studies/sources on Kaifeng imperial palace as it was during the Northern
Song?  She's particularly interested in how empresses and imperial consorts
resided in the palace, I think. How big each room might have been.  How
they were placed within the building, etc.  We are aware that a current
"palace" in Kaifeng city is a reconstruction and the original one was
burned down when the Jin entered the city.  But we are hoping that there
might be archaeological reports or secondary source that have analyzed
textual materials...  Thank you for whatever advice you may be able to give
us.
