Thefts at New Smyrna Free Docks

This morning we experienced a theft on our boat at the New Smyrna free
dock. While making a report to the police, as well as during a discussion
with a captain of the pontoon river cruise boat moored adjacent to us, we
were informed that the police are well aware of the thefts and break-ins
here. Though this occurs periodically, it does occur regularly on this, as
well as the other free  docks here in New Smyrna; bikels kept  shoreside
are immune either as they are regularly vandalized.
In the past, we've also had the privilege to entertain rats onboard that we
picked up at this location, at least until we finally were able to absent
them from our boat. One occasion included a pair of rats... must have been
planning a honeymoon cruise.
We're not suggesting to avoid these docks, but increased awareness, as well
as increased security by boat owners might be called for. At the very
least, keep easily carried off items out of reach of the dockside folks, or
maybe secure them to the boat; might also want to lock hatches and
companionways when not onboard. In spite of it all, this yachting continues
to be fun and at times, challenging!
