Last weeks project was rebuilding my steering ram.
Here is a how to. First off I have a wagner pump,
model 701. Here is the contact info for a rebuild kit:
Mark Keenholts 206-789-2896. I suspect anyone who
answers could help. You need the outside diameter
measurement from the ram.
I was lucky enough that a friend of mine had a spare
ram, identical to mine. So I slapped his in and ripped
mine apart the other day. Fairly easy to take apart. I
am not sure, but west marine sells rebuld kits maybe
for this, along with a special tool to take apart the
ram. I didnt use a special tool, and it would be nice,
not needed.
The side of the ram that was leaking for me was
where the ram meets up with the rudder. There are some
steps needed to be taken before the ram is acessible.
The hoses need to be removed, as do the connectors.
When you do this put a cloth or container under the
hoses as your steering fluid is going to leak. I
reused it.
There is a cap with threads on it for this side. I
wrapped a cloth around the threads and put a pair of
channel locks on it. A pipe wrench would work to I
think. If you are kind of gentle, the threads will
only be damaged slightly. Why is this not a problem?
The threads you are grabbing are already exposed and
not screwed into the ram. Of course, grabbing and
using minimal force would be best. Turn until the cap
loosens, then it easily is removed. Its very simple
once the cap is off. There are a number of gaskets in
there. I orderd the rebuild kit today and hope that
all I need is in there. We will see. I orederd two,
one to rebuild my unit, and one as a spare. I suggest
to anyone doing any cruising to have a spare kit, or
even a spare ram. the ram is expensive though. This
leak in the steering could easily have been as
devestating as engine failure. I also have spare
steering fluid as well now. good lessons to learn
while local...

Seems that there are (at least) three companies in Vancouver that
claim to make "genuine" Wagner parts - others are Summer Engineering
and (perhaps AutoNav - I've lost my notes...)

REPLY
Paul Wagner is a Vancouverite.
Wagner Steering was a Vancouver company of good repute for many years.
Summer Equipment is now the "Wagner Hydraulic Steering" company; having
bought the rights to the company from Paul.
They are now the manufacturers of all Wagner parts.
Autonav is the new company that Paul Wagner started. Their focus is
autopilots, not just steering equipment.
Jasram is a dealer, who would get their parts from Summer, as would the
companies in Seattle.
So yes all these companies do in fact supply "genuine" Wagner parts. They
all come from the same (right) source.
If you have any questions on parts availability or service call Summer
Equipment, and ask for Bill Stewart.

Someone from Autonav had gotten back to me yesterday.
They sell a rebuild kit for 75.00 or maybe 70. MUCH
higher than the other company I posted about. I
inquired to what this kit had but have not gotten a
response yet. I dont really care if the parts are
gneuine or not. As long as they dont leak and last
another 20 years Ill be happy.
