View all threadsHi,
I have a media handling record that I created that contains a file of type video/mp4.
Is there any way to view it with the CSpace interface? Or is it intended only to be stored, later to be downloaded and viewed elsewhere?
thanks,
Willi Wolf
Willi,
You can't view video via the CSpace UI, but if you click on the thumbnail most browsers will open a new tab and play the content for you - definitely works that way in Chrome and FF, but I haven't tried on Safari or Edge.
Hope this helps,
M

Thanks Megan,
I realize now that I have some MP4 files that are probably too large. The modest size ones are playing as you describe.
I will dig into the server logs and see what's going on with the server resources, I'm currently running a small server in the cloud for CSpace that probably can't deal with large MP4 files streaming out.

Willi,
CSpace does not support streaming media in general and relies (as Megan
noted) on whatever support is built in to your browser.
In the case of playback of large video files, the user experience is
unlikely to be adequate unless you have sufficient bandwidth (and as you
note, your server is fast enouth) or you download the file to your local
system and playback from there.
We have worked around this at UC Berkeley. Recall that last year I replied
to a similar query from you... I paste it back in here for your reference.
Do please feel free to contact me for more details.

Willi,
UC Berkeley (i.e. the Hearst Museum of Anthropology) also stores a limited
set of other media formats, e.g. "video files". CSpace does not make
"derivatives" for non-image media -- instead the original media is stored
and a placeholder for the media type is shown in the UI. The Hearst
currently stores audio files (both AIFF and MP3 files) and video files (as
MP4).
In order to make "playable" versions of the streaming media, separate
lower-quality versions of the media were made outside cspace and uploaded
to CSpace separately alongside the high-res archival versions. A bit of an
effort, to be sure!
These streaming files are rendered outside the regular CSpace frontend and
backend via custom code. Here are a couple records from the Hearst Museum
Blacklight Portal.

Hi,
Does CSpace have plans to address media files in both CSpace and the public browser?
Could embed URLs be used to lessen any infrastructure build-out?
