I haven’t been very active on the list since the loss of Another Asylum, our 60’ trawler, in Irma and Maria; battered in Irma, got her to Puerto Rico, hauled and surveyed before Maria, blew off of the stands in Maria onto the less damaged side. 80% loss from Irma, 40% loss from Maria, a not very happy insurance company after being presented with two fully documented losses, but which saw the light with some arm twisting. We had lived on board for seventeen years, had been through seven hurricanes with zero damage, but now realize that the only viable solution for a bigger boat is too have it strapped down in a pit for 4-5 months each year, meaning living aboard is no longer an option.
We have now purchased a 1993 Riviera 39 sportfish, which had belonged to a friend from new, for use as a getaway boat. It needed a full interior makeover as it was original and one of the projects we have been doing is installing teak and holly flooring throughout. We have built up five coats of interior urethane and have noticed some lightening in places from UV. It has been suggested that a spar varnish be used for top coating, but I am sure that many of you have found other options.
We will have 65% light block mesh on the saloon side windows and 92% mesh across the front, which will help, but I would prefer to finish the coating with something UV resistant and forget about it for our life on the boat!!
Quite looking forward to going upwind at 20 knts.
