TWL: Woofers

Just to get everyone's head out of the heads for a moment to somewhere
more pleasant.

I have a question for the Hi-Fi (as it used to be called) gurus.

As previously posted I am installing the compact Sony Dream machine -
surround sound. Never having had one before I am wondering where to put
the woofer. One sensible location that Arild suggested was under the
settee. However because of its height I would have to lay the woofer on
its side. With the sound opening which is at the top pointing towards a
grill.

Is there a problem with horizontal installation? Also since the woofer
would be lying on sound insulation (the engine room is below) should it
be raised up or can it just lie on top of this? I am assuming that it
doesn't resonate and the sound comes out of the top - or end in my case
so the sound wouldn't be muffled.

All feedback welcomed.

You can put those just about anywhere, in any position, as long as you don't
cover any vent holes. Sub-bass is such a low frequency, it'll rock you just
about anywhere. Make sure it's secure, with a pad of some kind so it doesn't
"buzz" against a hard surface. I have a Bose system in my pilothouse, with
the two little cube speakers pointing at my head at the wheel, and the
sub-bass over in the corner. Sounds great!
