Dear Colleagues:
This information might be useful to fellow Luddites who still use the
Postal mail to send in our JSYS subscription forms: I was just about to
mail out my form for Volume 44 when I noticed that the address on the order
forms has not been corrected. As several colleagues and I found out last
year, the Postal Service would return all mail sent to
"Institute of East Asian Studies
Publication Department
1995 University Ave, Ste. 520N
Berkeley, CA 94704-2318"
In order for the mail to get through, one must add "University of
California, Berkeley" below the line "Publication Department." The correct
address (for domestic mail) should look like this:
Institute of East Asian Studies
Publication Department
University of California, Berkeley
1995 University Ave, Ste. 520N
Berkeley, CA 94704-2318
I know a five-line address looks really weird, but at least last year it
was what it took for the order form to arrive in the right place. I hope
this will still work this year. :)
All the best,
Xiao-bin
Dear Xiao-bin,
It took us a while last year to realize that the +4 of the 5+4 zip code only makes sense when the mail goes to the university to process, so that the addition of UC Berkeley is required. We need to fix this on the form.
Thanks.
Michael

Dear Michael and Xiao-bin,
A correction on the correction:
Upon careful inspection you will see that we DID correct (actually changed)
the zipcode on the new forms.
We have been assured the new zipcode 94704-2318 is sufficient with or
without any reverence to "University of California, UC Berkeley, or UCB".
though I do choose to include it in my signature block below.
I will have the electronic forms updated, but I don't think we need to fret
about it as long as people are not using the old 94720-2318 zipcode.
Martin Backstrom (Associate Director) at IEAS met several times with UC
Mail Services and with the United States Postal Representative to determine
the cause and solution to our mailing problems since our move to our 1995
University location.
The result was we CHANGED the the zipcode from 94720-2318 to 94704-2318.
We have been repeatedly assured that as long as those numbers are there,
the mail will get to 1) our building and 2) our department.
With all this said, please do pass along even a single instance you hear of
where mail has been returned to someone using 94720-2318.
Thanks.
Erik
