I got one of those semi-humorous emails today with a list of "things you didn't
know." The one that caught my attention was this apocryphal point:
Q. Most boat owners name their boats. What is the most popular boat name
requested?
A. Obsession
I dunno 'bout that. I know my own boat's name is a fairly popular one - I
didn't name it; it came to me so named. In addition to Calypso, I also know
Wind Runner/Walker/Song/blah, blah is ever popular amongst blow boaters.
Just haven't seen so many Obsessions. Did see "Pamela's Mink" once, and
friend's who sailed the rim of the Pacific saw and remembered "Hot Ruddered
Bum."

I can't speak for popularity other than I've noticed way too many "something"
Wind(s) in both sailboats and trawlers, mine not excluded. I couldn't get
'Gentle Wind' off my flybridge/transom fast enough...
That said, I thought I would die laughing when we came upon "Never again II".
We can all appreciate that one.

T&T: Boat name popularityThanks, AL. Interesting. Obsession seems to be
passe nowadays. I wonder if this info is based solely on BoatUS own
graphics request data? I am guessing the USCG's documentation list would be
bigger and have a running tally vice a year-to-year summary. But collated
state data would be the best. Just the statistician in me.....

Yep, there's a 36 Grand Banks on my dock also named Calypso.
When we were discussing the purchase our current boat, my wife, who was less
than enthusiastic, told me to "just make a low ball offer"; hoping it would
not be accepted. We were about to be two boat owners as we had not sold the
previous vessel. Well, the answer came back "yes" and I wanted to use my
wife's response for the name; "Oh Sh..!"
I thought it had a nice ring to it but she thought the Coast Guard would
object.
