The proposed cost is $2 million and a spot can be reserved with a
$50,000 deposit. One vessel is planned for a 2009 delivery, two in
2010 and three in 2011 and two more in 2012 for a total of eight
vessels built at Kelly Archer in NZ. The Dashew's have reserved hull
#4 for themselves.
The price is for a fully equipped vessel including all spare parts,
furnishings, etc. Take delivery - go cruising.

I'm assuming that $2M doesn't include electronics. I understand the
reasons to standardize everything else for easy fabrication and
project management reasons, but electronics has got to involve the
owner's preferences. A good electronics package on a boat of this
caliber would start at $100K, and could be double that with full
redundancy.

I know that Nordhavn owners spend that much, but isn't there
something wrong with that picture. Ben Gray went around the world
and through the NW passage in a boat that had the following (directly
from the Yachtworld listing):
* Pactor 3 modem for SSB Sailmail
* Icom 802 SSB
* Icom 402 VHF
* Garmin 76 and Garmin 172 GPS
* JRC 24 mile radar
* Desktop nav computer (2005)
I think that "package" is worth less than 10K, or an order of
magnitude less than your "starting" estimate. (I admit there is not
an autopilot on that list, so throw in another 6K for a good one).
Lots of expense equal lots of complexity which equals lots of
breakdowns. Your "simple" cruisers like Ben may have more time for
cruising and need less time to spend fixing the inevitable breakdowns
of their systems.

Actually, the best brands of modern electronics are pretty reliable
(computer excepted)... Furuno in particular. At least compared to
anything else on the boat.
Probably the biggest decision in cost/benefit are the SatCom devices,
not to mention Sat TV, especially if we're talking the bigger
Inmarsat for world-wide digital SatCom. Those devices, which together
can cost another $30-40K, probably define the transition between
trawler yacht and purpose-build passagemaker. As I see it, we've got
SSB/Pactor on one end of the spectrum, Iridium in the middle and
Inmarsat at the far end in terms of cost and performance.
The 83' FPB "Windhorse" probably has less than $100K in electronics,
but a lot more than $10K.
