Note: The Fork-tailed Flycatcher reported last night from Hadlyme was
seen by many today. Rather than the usual individual attributions I
am going to try summarizing.
From a long list of birders:
12/01/13 - Lyme, Hadlyme Ferry Landing, (EAST side of the river!), by
Gillette Castle -- 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at least; Fork-tailed
Flycatcher.
"I was there at 7:00 this morning when Dan Rottino located the bird in
a 10' bushy tree on the bank of the river, about 75feet north of the
parking lot. This may be where it was roosting. It was down low when
it was spotted."
Relocated by 8 AM "near the edge of the river just north of the
parking lot." Stayed until 8:45, " occasionally flying to different
perches surrounding the parking area."
"The bird is on the Hadlyme ferry slot, so it is 154 Ferry Rd, Lyme
for GPS. So from 95 it is exit 70, rt 156 north, to rt 82 west to rt
148 to end."
"I last saw the flycatcher at 12:45pm and there were plenty of birders
watching it."
"9:50am - 12:50pm - FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER observed continuously for
first hour and a half near ferry parking lot especially near small
swamp on right side. Later spending more time in thickets along rock
ledge near restroom buildings and disappearing a couple of times for
15 mins. or more."
"Still there as of 1:45. Last seen flying up to Gillette Castle."
"I left when it got too dark to photograph any longer. It was just
about 4 PM , and the bird was still displaying nicely at various
perches around the parking area, including on the railing (very
close)."
Thanks to everyone who provided updates and directions as well as
travel warnings for the icy roads. As always, check the original
posts on CTBirds for the real details. If nothing else, check there
for links to pictures! Judging from the quality and quantity of
pictures by many birders this must have been one cooperative bird.
