I'm in the process of cleaning and polishing ALL the exterior stainless on my trawler since we're getting ready to re-install it after having the entire boat painted with AwlGrip. I tried Barkeeper's Friend (oxalic acid), but didn't like the abrasiveness. A friend recommended Davis' FSR (Fiberglass Stain Remover) - a blue gel that also contains oxalic acid. FSR works like a charm - better than the Barkeeper's Friend. Just wipe a little on the trouble spots, let sit for a few minutes, then gently scrub with a soft steel brush (the kind that looks like a toothbrush on steroids) - it won't scratch the finish. The gel is nice since it clings to vertical surfaces well.
After scrubbing and a wipe-down with a damp rag or spraying with a hose, I wipe the stainless with Sheila Shine. Same trawler friend recommended it - it's even approved for food-grade stainless, and is used in food and industrial applications. No rubbing - just wipe on with a sparing amount. Apparently NASA and the Navy use a lot of the stuff. So far, I'm very happy with it. www.sheilashineinc.com
I found it through Amazon (ReStockIt was the vendor) for less than $9 a quart, and a quart lasts a LONG time. ReStockIt had it in my hands very quickly. YMMV... I'm just a happy gal.
