Jim,
In your first post you said you were not happy with your Spurs since once they failed to cut a net that you got caught in. The thought that came to me was how many times did they do their job with no complaint and nothing for you to notice? So was the one failure you had a once in 10, 100, 10000, 10000 or what event. It is hard to draw much statistical significance from a single event. Perhaps they have worked quite well virtually all the time.
Having once carelessly caught a 3/4" line in one prop while going astern while turning around in a tight spot in the middle of nowhere in cold Canadian waters I know how frustrating it can be. You can bet after that event 10 years ago I have been much more fastidious in tending my lines and ensuring the deck helpers are too. I do not have line cutters on Crackerjack but the props are well protected by the hulls and keels going forward but not from a line hanging off the stern when going astern!
Good luck on finding a solution.

Gary,
Good point, I don't know how many times they potentially saved me from a
breakdown having successfully cut lines or ropes.
In fact, in hind sight I now recall making the mistake of reversing my
engines (I had little choice in that situation) but had forgotten that our
dinghy tow rope was not polypro and had no floats attached (rookie mistake
from which I learned a valuable lesson) and went under the boat, cut the
line and sent my dinghy floating out to sea!
So in the end I can't complain about the functionality of the Spurs but I
can complain about the price. Maybe they're worth $800/1.5" shaft but I'm
going to shop around and compare anecdotal reports such as on these forums
and make an informed decision instead of taking a contractor's sole
recommendation. Thanks for your input and the reminder that our memories
may be short sighted from time to time.
Regards,
Jim
