Any one looking to head North on the Hudson, wait a few more weeks! The
river is open, but the Champlain and Erie canals are closed because of
flooding. You can make it as far as Troy. Stopped by the Troy City Docks
yesterday and there were a few boaters looking to continue going North,
but it's not looking good. The tentative opening date has been pushed
back from May 1st to May 15th. I witness some massive logs/debris
floating down stream at a high rate of speed. Certainly something you
don't want to encounter while underway.

If you go to www.canals.ny.gov you can get the latest on the canals status.
If you go to the Waterford NY website you can view the Visitor Center
webcams. Currently the water is up to the top of the seawall but it is
receding.

Tom,
Thanks for the info, we have a tentative trip to Lake Champlain planned for
later this summer. As for the debris in the river, sometimes it lasts into June
depending on the amount of winter snow melt and spring rains.I have seen
telephone poles, RR ties and truck tires on rims floating just under the
surface of the Hudson. It can make night navigationscary.
Have fun,Marc and Andree
