Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch - Grimsby, ON - Saturday, March 15, 2003

Although the first day of the first warm spell of the season brought fewer
birds than expected to the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch at Grimsby, ON,
species variety was excellent.

Turkey Vulture - 1
Bald Eagle - 1
Northern Harrier - 2
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 8
Cooper's Hawk - 4
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1
Red-tailed Hawk - 21
Rough-legged Hawk - 3
American Kestrel - 1
Total - 42

Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch counters are stationed at Beamer Memorial
Conservation Area in Grimsby, ON from 8AM-4PM Standard Time every day from
March 1 through May 15, except in very bad weather. An average of 14,500
of 15 species of hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures is counted each

Visitors are always welcome. To get to Beamer CA take the Queen Elizabeth
Way (QEW) to Exit 71 in Grimsby, then follow Christie St. South and
Mountain Ave. to the top of the escarpment. Turn right (west) on Ridge Rd.
W., go 1.6km to Quarry Rd., then turn right again and go 100 yards.
Parking is available inside the park, at the entrance and on Quarry and
Ridge Roads. When parking at the entrance or on the roads please DO NOT
LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR.
