Retrieved another Eastern Bluebird nesting box here that a local Black Bear had taken down. The pole was bent down at it's base and top of the box had been torn off. No suggestions here so far on dealing with bears knocking down nesting boxes. White Memorial Conservation Center suggested moving the boxes further out in the field where most of my nesting boxes are located to get them away from "paths" for the bears.. Have had problems with House Wren nesting boxes too. I put House Wren boxes high up on the sides of the house here and so far no bear problems. I am thinking about heavy poles that bears can not bend and having the boxes at least 8 feet high on the poles. Another possibility is an electric fence around the poles which I think would be expensive. Also need to get some good Eastern Bluebird nesting boxes as the ones I have gotten from the CT Wildlife Division do not meet the Dave Rosgen standard for nesting boxes.
