Official Counter: Hugh Kent
Observers: Andrew Fix, Ian Woodfield, Liz Kent, Olga Klekner,
Patrick Tomlinson, Steve Wagner
Visitors:
Big thanks to Andy, Dana, Ian, Liz, Patrick and Steve for helping spot. The
majority of Raptors were hard to find high to the north. It was great to
meet Stefan, a visiting bander (ringer) from the UK.
Weather:
Wind started light generally from the north and then switched to south east
mid morning. Cloud cover was variable but never exceeded 60%. It was hot
again with the temperature climbing to high twenties by mid morning.
Visibility was good, with pressure falling 5 points during the day.
Raptor Observations:
We had to work for our Broad-wing Hawk (488) sightings today with most
streaming high to the north, There was a steady flow of Sharp-shinned
Hawks(162) throughout the day with the flight line to the north of the
tower, sometimes very high. Good movements of Bald Eagles (19), Northern
Harriers (13), Red-tailed Hawks (17) and American Kestrels (17), again all
to the north. Turkey Vultures (54) are beginning to move. Eleven species
again today.
Non-raptor Observations:
Normal mix of species today with the exception of an Eastern Whip poorwill,
which was flushed in the early morning while arriving at the tower. Also
the Passerine banders brought a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Yellow-billed
Cuckoo, Northern Flicker and a Sharp-shinned Hawk to the Tower for release-
they had a good morning! The Blue Jays (10,410) were relentless flying west
over the Tower until early afternoon. The list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S195620624
Predictions:
Tomorrow's winds are forecast to be light from the north east until midday.
More cloudy and the temperature is likely to be a bit lower. Hopefully this
will bring more Broad-wings and other raptors past and over the Tower.
