A posting by Jim Healy made me decide to look up the regulations etc.
By the
way someone posted a website for locating VTS's "anywhere in the world." It
doesn't list Berwick in Louisana.
The Coast Pilot for the Gulf says that you
are required to report in to a VTS if your vessel is 30 meters ( 131 ft
+/-) or longer, if you are towing and you are 26 ft or longer, or a commercial
vessel licensed to carry 50 passengers or more.
This said, I can tell you
that the Berwick VTS doesn't hesitate to accept a call in from boats less than
131 feet; and when you report in you tell them the type of vessel and length.
And they really do keep track of you as I once was a bit tardy in calling them
and they called me (all on a VHF radio of course).

Sorry for the typo; I should have said 40 meters (131+/- feet).......
