We have a Furuno radar set. Last night we were on Chequamegon Bay on Lake
Superior watching a sharp thunderstorm moving away to our east and
another one coming from the west. We came upon a substantial yacht ahead
and saw only a weak signature on the radar screen. Then we approached a
substantial steel sea buoy with good built in radar reflectors. It too
had a weak return. In the past, such buoys also left a strong signature
on the screen. In the gathering darkness and keeping my eye on where we
were going, I did not try to adjust the set. I understand radar theory,
but am no expert on it. We generally just leave the set on the standard
factory default settings and run it on auto mode. My question is why am I
getting such a weak signal return? We were running on about = or 1 mile
range. What adjustments should be made? Appreciate any ideas.
