Good morning,
Compared with yesterday, far fewer birds were observed in the Park this
morning. A walk in Tilden's Woods yielded only a few dozen birds.
Highlights reported from there include:
Kentucky Warbler -- 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker -- 1 female
Blue-winged Warbler -- 1 female
Lincoln's Sparrow -- 2 singing!
Just south of the Visitor Centre were:
Cerulean warbler -- 1 male
White-eyed Vireo -- 1
Mourning Warbler -- 1
However, the best birds were reported from the tip area. However, because
the winds were fairly strong from the west, most everything was on the
east side. Most exciting was a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER seen at the
Sparrow field and then later near the tip. However another more recent
report of another bird has also come from the Sparrow Field so it is
possible 2 birds are involved. Also reported from the tip was a WESTERN
KINGBIRD, but no details have been reported to the Visitort Centre so
far. A BLACKPOLL WARBLER posed for photographers on the east side as
well.
The *** PAINTED BUNTING *** was reported once again this morning (7:30
a.m.), this time back at its original spot, immediately behind the
washrooms at Sleepy Hollow. Apparently, it sat up for 5 minutes!!
Also north of the Visitor centre was a Summer Tanager (age and gender not
reported). It was reported from "south of Black Willow". A 1st year male
Summer Tanager was present yesterday (May 9) afternoon and evening,
ranging from north of the Dunes parking lot south to near Sleepy Hollow.
A PRAIRIE WARBLER was seen well by many a short walk north of the Dunes
parking lot, from along the bike trail on May 9, 2002.
Also reported yesterday evening (8:10 p.m.) was an adult HARRIS'S
SPARROW. It was observed along the road (Conc. E) that runs along the
dyke, immediately outside the park gate. It was reported from the south
side of the dyke, approximately two-thirds of the way along from the west
going east.
Good birding!
