Tom,
I have no trouble and no mess changing the paper towels. My filter canisters
are located so as to be above the level of the sump. When it's time to change
paper towels I loosen the top of the cannister, with the oil hot, and allow
the liquid oil to drain back into the engine. The now nearly dry roll of
towels is lifted out of the cannister by the metal holder and deposited in a
plastic garbage bag. There is no fuss and very little muss.
The trick for changing the full flow spin on filters is to put a zip lock bag
around them before they come off. This really reduces the mess and works for
fuel filters too.
