For what it's worth......
I was taught, when using starter fluid to spray it on a shop towel, then hold
the towel next to the air intake, as opposed to spraying the fluid directly
in the intake.
I was instructed that, if you have to use ether spray, to start cranking first
and then give it shot of spray.

At the Yanmar owners school at Mack Boring in NJ (they are the importers for
Yanmar on the east coast) they say Never to spray ether (starting fluid) into
the air intake, and they display the pistons with bent rods that have resulted
from this. The ether mix detonates in the cylinder before the piston gets to the
top, resulting in a violent push down, when the crank is still trying to push
the piston up to the top. The bent push rods on display drove the point home
vividly.
