20250105: Problems with Lady Heather and Trimble Lassen SK II GPS module

Looking for some help here ...

I have been using Lady Heather (LH, v6.xx) for some time now, and I have it
working fine with my HP Z3805As ...

I recently acquired a Trimble Lassen SK II module (link
http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/SBC/GPS/apps/lassensk2_info.pdfand
link https://docs.ampnuts.ru/eevblog.docs/Trimble/Manuals/Lassen_SK_II.pdf)
and I have it up and running in a system with proper DB9(DE9) serial
connectors :-) The final manual for these modules dates from 1999 (same as
the Lassen LP module). The Lassen SK II does bidirectional TSIP @
9600,0,8,1 on its Port 1 and unidirectional (i.e., output only) NMEA @
4800,N,8,1 on its Port 2. At my location, the Lassen SK II locks with at
least 4 GPS satellites in view. It's drawing around 110mA @5V with an
active antenna attached, which is pretty close to its specs.

I can see the (default) $GPGGA and $GPVTG NMEA strings on Port 2 -- works
fine. I can see some sort of binary on Port 1 -- look OK. But I cannot get
past the "empty" startup screen in Lady Heather on either. I am connecting
to it via a USB-to-serial adapter that is on my COM11.

  • My command line for LH on Lassen's Port 1 for TSIP: "C:\Program Files
    (x86)\Heather\HEATHER (2).EXE" /11 /rx /br=9600:8:O:1 /tz=-8pst/pdt
  • If I set it for auto-detect (/rx) when connected to Port 1, it
discovers a TSIP device (though not every time), and then ... LH does
    nothing.
  • My command line for LH on Lassen's Port 1 for TSIP: "C:\Program Files
    (x86)\Heather\HEATHER (2).EXE" /11 /rxt /br=9600:8:O:1 /tz=-8pst/pdt
  • If I set it for a TSIP receiver (/rxt) when connected to Port 1 ,
    LH... does nothing.
  • My command line for LH on Lassen's Port 2 for NMEA: "C:\Program Files
    (x86)\Heather\HEATHER (2).EXE" /11 /rxn /br=4800:8:N:1 /tz=-8pst/pdt
  • If I set it for NMEA (/rxn) when connected to Port 2, LH also does ...
    nothing.

Any ideas on why LH isn't playing nice with this receiver?

All:

NVM -- turns out I had a misconfigured RC filter on my RS232 interface card
that was killing the TSIP commands to the Lassen GPS receiver .. it's all
working now.

FWIW, I found a very nice piece of free software that is a great complement
to Lady Heather -- ProTempis' visual timing studio
https://www.protempis.com/support. I especially like the fact that I can
easily see the traffic between the app and the GPS receiver (as TSIP, for
example).
