midst of a cruise from the West coast of Florida to
Chesapeake Bay (have
come
631 miles in the past two weeks) and while there

I wonder if this is  a fairly average distance to
travel in the given time (14 days). The reason I ask
is I was discussing travel times  with a salesperson
this past weekend. He was showing a boat that was
brought up from near Santa Barbara California to San
Francisco California. When I inquired the travel time
I was told it took 35 hours total to travel straight
through. The distance between the two I think is a bit
less than 631 miles. But 1.x day travel as compared to
14 days seems to have a large discrepancy. Anyone care
to comment?

Obviously, the difference is found in the speed of the boats, perhaps
weather/tide conditions (but they wouldn't account for such a disparity).

It's like asking someone how long it takes to drive across the United
States. If I drive 70 MPH for 14 hours a day, it's going to take a lot less
time than for someone who drives 50 MPH for 8 hours a day and stops to look
at the scenery along the way.

I'm going to leave in mid-June for a trip to Cape Cod (500 miles) and then
"down east." My trawler's hull speed is 7.5 knots. The 500 miles to
Osterville (Cape Cod) will take me 500/7.5 hours (not taking into
consideration wind/tide/current). That's 67 hours of cruising time - divide
it into as many days as you want. Another boat in my marina can cruise at
30 knots - the same trip would take him 500/30 hours or 17 hours! (Of
course he'd have to stop for GAS more often than I'll have to stop for
DIESEL!)

Time doesn't mean much when talking about covering a certain distance. It's
the distance and speed that is important to know about.

18 knot average speed can be done by many boats in the right conditions.
