Thanks to those of you the replied to the first email. I have now determined
that it is water from a bad seal in the water pump, not fuel. I am now trying
to get a rebuild kit. The carbon core is out of round and the shaft is scored.
Once again thanks for everyone's help.
If anyone knows of a good place to get rebuild kits for sherwood pumps, that
would be helpful too.
Thanks again.

Depco Pump is the place for all things pumpish. www.depcopump.com. They
will sell you a rebuild kit, individual parts, rebuild your pump or sell you
a new pump at far less than Universal prices.
You may find it economical to buy a new pump if the shaft has to be
replaced. For modest scoring, try cleaning the shaft up with fine silicon
carbide sandpaper, starting with 240 and ending with 600 grit. Then shorten
the seal spacer so that the seal rests on a slightly different part of the
shaft. Mine has been going for another 5 years since I gave it this
treatment.
