Their forums are good source of info, I don't think the student version is
limited but you can ask there : http://forums.ni.com/
In a past life I was a programmer but found the virtual instrument hard to
understand, could be it's too easy.
CTL T which brings up two windows was one key, learning the menus was another.
User group meetings help also.

Do the Student Versions allow full access and use of the NI Driver library?
I want to control some definitely non-student hardware.

Student versions of LabView are "in bounds" for personal use.
Using the results for publication might get NI's attention, but
otherwise they have no problem with individual use. I have
registered my copy of LabView 8.5 Student Edition & gotten
direct technical help from them with very good results.
Student versions have been on *bay for less than $90.

Three copies of the Version 7.1 Student Edition are available here
(found by a froogle search):
http://www.textbooks.com/BooksDescription.php?CSID=DW2BW33KOOKBZKOMODUKCACQS&BKN=715789#mplistings
I was going to sell my copy until I saw the prices. As a long-time
LabVIEW programmer, version 7.1 is my favorite. I really disliked all
of the 8.x versions. The 2009 version isn't bad and I only installed
the 2010 version today.

the LabView 2009 student edition seems to be either $79.95 as a dvd or
$115 as a textbook bundle.
http://www.ni.com/labviewse/select.htm
looking at the FAQ:
http://www.ni.com/labviewse/labviewse_faq.htm
it appears that there's no limitation to the student edition except
that it puts a watermark on your screen.

Temperature has an important impact on short term stability in the range of
seconds and up, that's correct. However OCXO are usually using higher-Q
crystals (overtones, often SC-cuts), while VCXO, TCXO and clocks are mostly
using fundamental mode or "low" overtone crystals.
Thanks for the explanation.
I'll keep an eye on axtal, they look quite nice.

Single cycle jitter is a bit confusing when you talk about bandwidths of 5Hz

needed.
Confusing is the right word. I can guess where it comes from,
but i think i will first read the stuff provided by Charles
before i continue asking questions.
Thanks so far and continue discussing ;-)

Yes, the student edition is fully functional. Printed results will include
a "Student Edition" water mark to remind you it's not for publication.

As a heads up. What I ran into is that different versions of NI may or may
not support the various cards we find on epay or at hamfests. Thats why I
picked up a circa 2000 vintage of NI. It supported the ethernet gpib
adapters that I ran across and the ISA cards...
After about 2002 these drivers and interfaces were obsolete.
I am sure there are experts in this group that know far more then I do.
Just a caution.

Why don't you like about Rev 8, if I may ask?

It appears you have to have "student" status (an ID, course schedule,
