TWL: Appendages on Dutch Trawler

Those of you who receive Trawler World Buy-Sell-Trade saw the URL for a
Dutch Trawler.  I hit
the link and went to the website.  It's a nice looking cruiser.  One part
of the website I visited was http://www.moll.nl/boat/engine.html and there
I saw something I was not familiar with.

Would some of you please go there and come back and tell me what those
appendages attached to the transom below the waterline are?  I'd tell you
what they look like to me, but they can't be that.  ;-)

Thanks,

Mel:
I think they are for:

  1. When the boat is used for trawling for shrimp. they lower the stern of
the boat in shallow water enough to make the rollers touch the bottom.  The
rollers make the shrimp jump up and you catch them in the net you are
    draging behind the boat.

or

  1. Because the tides are BIG over there,  when the tide goes out the boat
can rest upright on the bottom.  The bottom center picture shows something
that looks like whale fins toward the bow of the boat.  These things (at
the stern) in the top picture, probably are to keep the running gear from
sinking too deep into the bottom and the whale fins from breaking off.  If
you look closely at the top picture,  I think I see something that will
allow  them to be  "flipped up" to allow the boat to get up on a plane...jd

Yep, your right Mel.  They're rollers so you can back up on a beach with
them.
Hee Haw!  All seriousness aside.  I havent the foggiest.  Let me know to.

Thanks, Mike.

Now whaddaya make of that?  They certainly do appear to be a variation
of that rotary stabilizer.  All that recent discussion on the List about
passive and active stabilization, and bilge keels and such... and no
mention of these critters.  I guess we can now start the thread all over
again.  ;-)

PS, But as John Reitzammer suggested, Paul Browne should still weigh in
on this. 8^)
