Gen-Set Question

Ahoy Lists,

My present power arrangement is a starting  27-series battery to the gen-set
that always needs charging because I do not use  the gen-set very often so
it's alternator never charges the battery.  I  have been going around this issue
with 3 choices listed below in no particular  order:

  1. Hard wire the gen-set starter to the house bank  which is always charged
by the Pro-Mariner 3 bank charger.

  1. Share the gen-set battery with a switched line  sharing the windlass
    battery

(My Pro-Mariner has 3 outputs, 1 to the main  engine, 2nd to the house bank
and 3rd to the windlass  battery. )

  1. Buy a small dedicated hardwired battery charger for  the gen-set.

I would ask the group which option is the  best.

Thank you & all have a safe & Happy  Christmas

Ciao, Capt Joe

For me the simple answer is to charge the battery manually every few
months using a simple auto charger. If you rarely use the genset then
why spend the money of a fancy solution. A good 27 series battery
should  keep charged for many months.
Maybe just get a fresh series 27 battery.
Check the alternator charging circuit on the genset because if it
never charges then the battery will run down through repeated starting
of the genset

How about an echo charger, connect it to the start battery of the main.
It will insure that the genset battery is charged up, and will keep them
isolated.

The situation begs the question - why is the genset battery dropping off
if it's not being used? Either there's a drain or the battery is shot.
Make sure you've defined the problem before you start treating symptoms.

why not simply fire up the genny for 30 minutes every 2 to 4 weeks so that
the genny's alternator top off its battery ?

if your genny's battery can't hold a charge for a couple of weeks or is too
weak to crank it, you have a problem. either the battery (how old?) some
corrosion, weak starter, etc... Fix the problem.

it's a good idea to regularly run a genny anyway...
