Boat US couldn't put together an accurate article on fire extinguishers 2
months ago. Did you see that? Had the PASS acronym wrong, and several
other
bits of incorrect info stated as fact. The video on their website had it
right, but the printed version was absolute garbage. I wrote and asked
them
to correct themselves but they feel that since the video was right people
would watch it and get the right message.
The insurance publications remind me of newspapers. Used to, you could just
read a newspaper for the facts; now editorials routinely appear on the front
page.
Think the same might be true of Boat US. Keith hit the nail on the head.
Their damage statistics have to be accurate or they couldn't stay in
business. Just read the numbers and draw your own conclusions. One I draw is
that the number of boats lost due to computer fires shrinks to the vanishing
point. Just use your computer with the usual caveats and do a GOOD survey of
your boat's electrical system. Along with other items likely to sink you.
Guy in the marina here's sailboat sank in the slip last week. Had a
refrigerator that required a TH for cooling water; it leaked. Didn't have
the bilge pump on auto because of contaminated bilge problem and he'd been
pumping diesel o'board. Fortunately the tide was high and it sank upright
with the keel in the mud. He'd been f@#ting around with a $4000 gps/radar
and couldn't be persuaded to take my advice and install a high water bilge
pump and alarm. Might have been installing a fire extinguisher for his
computer; don't know.
Bilge pump's moved up to the top of his list right after we crank his
pickled engine with the rebuilt starter today. Oh, and replacing the
radar/chartplotter box that went under.
Regards.
