LAPWING WATCH 2010 IS ENDING now January 3, 2011.... Mission Accomplished!
It was suggested that we set up a centralized "Lapwing Watch" for late 2010,
where our goal was to track all the sightings of Northern Lapwings across
North America in late 2010, and hopefully to top-it-off with a Lapwing
sighting on a Christmas Bird Count, on a count day. And thanks to
Newfoundland's excellent birders "we" (the North American birding community)
did get that record-setting CBC on January 2nd at the Ferryland,Newfoundland
CBC, for only the third Canadian CBC Lapwing since CBCs began in 1900!
Congratulations! Plus the unexpected icing-on-the-cake from a Prince Edward
Island lapwing on January 1st (see the photo at...
http://lapwings2010.blogspot.com/ and links there to the Jan2nd Newfoundland
CBC).
These two January birds provide a great "final chapter", and more than we
hoped for in late November when this Lapwing saga started in Quebec,
Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Now is a good time to end our daily tracking
of Lapwing reports from Labrador down to the Carolinas, and to give THANKS
to the expert and helpful birders, naturalists and photographers in the USA
and Canada who have collaborated in this with their time, info and photos
since Nov 26th.
If future Lapwing reports are emailed to us we will accumulate them for an
update in a few months, but the Lapwing website will be frozen this week,
and this is the final daily update posting on CTbirds.
Here's wishing everybody a Healthy New Year, and more great experiences with
birds and Nature! Tom Robben 10pm Jan3rd 2011 (robben99@gmail.com)
