Don't they sell some kind of rubber mat for this sort of thing? I think you
could cut some from the mats they use for cashiers to stand on. They would be
a lot easier to clean oil off of, and easier on the knees.

Every once in awhile I get an industrial catalog of some sort. As you might
suspect, there are mats made for this specific purpose, sorta. Mats for
machine shops are impervious to grease and oil, but they cost a lot more
than carpet remnants. For engine cleanliness, I might prefer knee pads to
carpeting I can't stow elsewhere - depends on the engine room. Still think
Charlie has a practical and inexpensive solution.

Garden/home/hardware centers have small closed cell foam kneeling pads,
about 12 x 24 inches, designed for just this purpose, in the garden of course.
