I want to give praise to Doug Miller at Milltech Marine a supplier of
everything  related to AIS.  For a few years I have used one of their AIS
receivers hardwired to a small Garmin plotter. Recently I wanted to upgrade
to be able to send the AIS signals via wifi to my laptop nav systems. A
couple of people on this list suggested that Milltech had a "dongle" that
would transmit the AIS data to my laptops and I purchased a rather
inexpensive unit to do this. Being not very computer savvy I really
couldn't get the thing to work so I called Doug for help. First he walked
me through the set up so my one laptop could see the ships on SF Bay.  He
was very patient and soon lost in his time whatever profit he made from the
dongle sale.

Being a greedy guy I then wanted to use the dongle signal to simultaneously
send data to both my laptop and iPad. The former runs polar navy and the
latter runs isailor or inavx.  It turns out you have to change the protocol
instructions in these programs to have the dongle service multiple devices.
Try as I might I just couldn't get the thing to work. After several email
exchanges with Doug he found the magic recipe, Those probably should have
been obvious to me in the first place.  He even sent the exact screen shots
of what the setting should be and then all worked like a champ.

What can I say? I have never had this kind of customer support from a
vendor for such a small item. I can hardly wait the next six months to try
this out on board Lilliana in Alaska.

I have no financial interest in this company.
